character.
CHARACTER NAME: Black★Rock Shooter
SERIES: Black★Rock Shooter in general and 2012 anime specific information on her.
CANON POINT: Post 2012 anime series
AGE: Unspecified. She can't be older than Kuroi Mato who is a first year middle school student.
APPEARANCE: Black★Rock Shooter appears as a young teenage girl in nothing more than the bare minimum of clothing beneath a uniquely tailored jacket. Also gloves and boots because those are cool.

PREVIOUS GAME HISTORY: N/A

PERSONALITY: Black★Rock Shooter is an alter-ego, or other self, that normally cannot exist on her own. Rather than being her own person with her own life, she is a reflection of someone else. Not only that but a reflection of this person's strife. She supposedly has no emotions of her own, and her existence is solely for the purpose of shouldering this person's emotional strain as physical pain in endless battles with others like herself.

These other alter-egos carry with them the burdens of their own girls. Most of them reside in their own section of their warped Otherworld, shaped and colored by their girl's individual trauma. Black★Rock Shooter's girl is named Kuroi Mato, and her trauma is simply that she refuses to cause anyone trauma. She is so afraid of hurting or being hurt that she simply rejects pain's existence within her and does all she can to banish it from anyone else's life. This notion is what fuels Black★Rock Shooter more than anything else. In order to fulfill this emotional need, she travels from base camp to base camp engaging the other alter-egos in battle and methodically destroying them. None of the alter-egos question this; it is simply what they've always done, fighting motivated by their counter-parts' turmoil until they obliterate all obstacles. One can't even refer to them as enemies as the other selves don't bare grudges against their peers; the rest are all merely obstacles. Once an other self is destroyed, the girl in reality forgets all the emotional pain her other self had carried for her.

Where Mato cannot hurt anyone, Black★Rock Shooter does nothing but hurt others. This is how she shoulder's Mato's pain and allows her to live without suffering. She is, in essence, a manifestation of Kuroi Mato herself warped to fit into a fantasy world where brutality and pain can mean nothing because everyone recovers from it so quickly. Much more prominent is the emotional pain of each other self's girl, and later the emotions of the alter-egos themselves. It could be said that while they don't have emotion, they are actually nothing but emotion. They are powered by it, restricted by it, and molded by it over all else.

Despite that Black★Rock Shooter should have no emotions of her own, this is shown to be false. Another other self by the name of Strength reveals that she was able to become self-aware through hearing her girl's voice and experiencing her tragic fear. It awakens an emotion in her that is entirely her own: love. When Black★Rock Shooter awakens and confronts Kuroi Mato, however, it isn't a loving reunion. Black★Rock Shooter ceaselessly mutilates her. She breaks bones, tosses her around, even throws rapid fire her way. Black★Rock Shooter gets angry because Mato still refuses to fight back. That anger is clearly her own emotion, not Mato's. In battling each other, akin to a mental struggle in which Mato battles herself, Black★Rock Shooter and Mato are able to establish themselves as separate. After Mato finally does retaliate, defeating her other self, Black★Rock Shooter seems proud in her own, quiet way, giving Mato a pointed look when Strength explains that they fight because they love their girls.

While she is inherently violent in action, Black★Rock Shooter motives are positive and generally selfless. She just has never had any need to hold back. There is nothing wrong with doing anything for her goals because that's all she's ever done. She beats Mato into an epiphany so she can grow as a person and kills other selves because it's all she can do to save their girls. But all the violence is merely a means to an end, a convenient and powerful tool. Black★Rock Shooter does not enjoy fighting or injuring others, but she will do it because she is the one who can, in that special way protagonists are willing to sacrifice themselves because they can dish out and take more damage than their friends. She's not real, after all. Her own well being isn't as important as Kuroi Mato's. She loves Mato, and she will fight for those she loves, not just because it's her nature.

She is very straight-forward in everything she does, no matter others' reactions to her, and doesn't seem to know the meaning of the words "hesitate" or "shame." She does think before she acts though. Perhaps rather than "think," the word "consider" is better. She takes in her surroundings and considers everything: its place, its motives, and its merit. It's hard to imagine her having a great amount of personality due to her often blank poker faces. In fact, at times she may not even be entirely aware she is feeling something until long after she feels it. But what goes on behind those eyes is bigger and more intense than many would realize. Her will and determination consume her, her concern for others distracts her, and her frustrations push her beyond her means. All while she cocks her head and continues to stare, eventually deciding that okay this thing is worth acknowledging.

Despite being a main character, Black★Rock Shooter only speaks in one of eight episodes. Words are precious and are not needed in a fight. They should be saved for those important enough to hear them. No longer being required to fight at all times, however, doesn't magically motivate her vocal chords. In fact, she states that she will continue to fight regardless. She's quiet always, expressive more through body language than facial expression or spoken word. That won't stop her from pointing out when something is stupid or annoying or unexpectedly nice. It won't stop her from narrowing her eyes at those she distrusts or allowing the edges of her lips to turn up in a barely-there smile. She relishes these feelings, even the negative ones. They're still feelings, they're a connection to Mato, and they're proof that she exists. She has no intent to hide them; she just doesn't always know what to do with them, let alone how to describe them.

Kuroi Mato is very fond of a story about a bird who flew through different colored skies and took all of the colors onto its wings. Eventually, the colors merged together into a muddy black, and the bird died. Black★Rock Shooter is one of several characters for whom this bird serves as a symbol. She is the little bird who travels to many worlds and shoulders the burdens of their colors, the little bird who shows Mato all the colors she's been avoiding.

ABILITIES: Black★Rock Shooter isn't based in reality and thus doesn't function like a human being. She is never shown eating or sleeping. Her endurance is beyond human capabilities, and her strength is greater than her body mass should allow. As Insane Black★Rock Shooter, she rips off one of her arms and injures both legs but still doesn't stop fighting. Her wounds heal extraordinarily quickly - not immediately, but fast enough that she's often unharmed by the end of any given battle. She doesn't even bleed in a human sense, instead releasing a saturated blue, pressurized substance when wounded. The force necessary to kill her seems to vary, but decapitation has always been a safe bet. Anything less, and there's always a chance she'll keep going.

She fights using two weapons: the Black Blade and the ★rock Cannon. Black Blade is fairly self-explanatory, a black sword with no apparent magical abilities. It seems to be her finishing weapon of choice. The ★rock Cannon is a large (very large) gun with unlimited ammunition. It shoots energy bullets, however, so whether she can fire it likely depends on her condition. Black★Rock Shooter is able to transform it into either a three-barreled gatling gun or two connected gatling guns for an even greater rate of fire. The second requires her to remain stationary. It appears that she can summon both the Black Blade and the ★rock Cannon at will, despite wherever she left them and whatever state they were left in. They're probably self-repairing in a similar way to Black★Rock Shooter herself.

In preparation for battle, a blue flame ignites outward from her left eye.

POSSESSIONS: Her possessions include the clothes on her back and her two weapons. She doesn't carry anything else as she's never needed anything else.

JOURNAL ENTRY SAMPLE:

[The phone reveals an out-of-focus view of a frowning girl's face before a key is dangled in front of it.]

I will not play. Take this back, and return me.

[It's not a request, it's a demand. She doesn't exactly look that threatening, but either she doesn't care or she doesn't think she needs to. Whichever it may be, she obviously expects an answer.]

THIRD-PERSON SAMPLE:

Black★Rock Shooter was not happy. For some time, she had been standing in the same place, staring out into the dark water. Her jacket shifted in the wind though not much as it was weighed down by moisture. Her heel tapped the slick rock beneath her feet once, twice, three times before she stopped and stilled again.

This wasn't part of her world. The others may have shaped their sections into separate worlds in their own right, but this was not one of them. Never had she been greeted by text upon arrival, and never had she been given anything either. That would have defeated the purpose. It bothered her. That someone would do this. She didn't understand the entire message given to her, but she did take away from it the clear intent to toy with her. She was many things but a toy was not one of them. She did not want to play, she did not want a phone or a key or anything they could think to give her. She wanted to know how they brought her here, she wanted to know how they got into her pocket without her knowing. Yes. That was what bothered her, she decided. She had not wanted something, but they had done it anyway. Whether or not she had done similar things in the past was a pointless train of thought.

She tapped her heel again, and narrowed her eyes.

"I will not let them."

She remained for another few seconds after she spoke. Then she turned and began to walk in the direction of the large fortress-esque building that stood out among the otherwise flat scenery, a strong purpose in every step.

Episode 8: BRS LINES

Yes, this is your world. How does it feel to be hurt, Black Rock Shooter?

(I made you bear all my pain, etc.) I don't mind. That's just our nature.

You want to be hurt?

(I want to be hurt properly!) I'll hurt you then.

Your wounds won't heal as fast as ours. Why won't you use it (the gun)?

(I don't want to... ever!)

It's unfair. You want to be hurt without hurting anyone else. It's unfair.

That was hardly anything, and you can't even move.

I won't stop fighting. I'll continue being hurt and bearing the pain. I won't stop fighting in this world.
